| WGW (Whitby Gothic Weekend) Post-mortem! |
[13 May 2008|12:37am] |
Wednesday 23rd April-Tuesday 29th
The April 08 WGW was my eighth and came at quite a good time as I had just been "let go" by a company I had been working for on a trial period a week or so before. I had been looking forward to going for a while but as I had been doing the new job for most of the time leading up to whitby some how the time to go still seemed to spring up on me!
Wednesday
The Journey up on the Wednesday was not too bad one we got past Doncaster but I must admit I did not feel in a Whitby mind set until I saw the Abbey (through dense mist/fog). The rest of Wednesday involved getting supplies from the supper market on flower gate (alone with a few other Goths) and settling into our accommodation.
Thursday
Thursday was Creamy, a pre WGW club night held at the Met (Metropole Hotel) It’s a good way to get in the mood for the weekend and is now almost a tradition for us to attend! The music was quite good. There was a set of gothic rock early on, then some 80s/Alternative but toward the end it all went a bit boring with a long set of cyber & industrial noise.
Friday
So on Friday we went to the Spa to get our wrist band. Embarrassingly I remembered all the extra forms of id items need to prove my identity but had left the tickets in our accommodation. So I had “quick” walk back a get them while Kate waited at the Spa and no doubt planned ways to kill me! Anyway after getting our tickets we browsed at the stalls where a TV crew was filming. I got a CD of early Inkubus Sukkubus songs which I actually prefer to there more recent stuff as is a bit less of a musical cliché and more varied.
On leaving the spa we bumped into Julian who is a really nice guy (and not just because he one gave us free tickets for the main event at the spaa few years back!) Then we headed to the met again as there are more stall there in the day, there we also saw Kates friends Jo and Rick.
Then evening came so it was time to go to the spa pavilion for the main event/bands for the fist time….
(To be continued)

| What is New Rave? |
[05 Apr 2007|06:48pm] |
What is new rave ? "Dance songs played very badly on real instruments, with influences and sounds from the 1992 rave scene. Led by bands such as Klaxons - who started making siren-heavy covers of old dance records" That's according to an article on "Baffling new genres" on the Virgin media music site. I know one Klaxons fan who wont agree with this although I think its a very accurate description!
New Gothic is also covered, which is not to be confused with nu gothic which was Him and Evenescence et al.

| Sisters of Mercy - Manchester May 4th |
[05 May 2006|12:13pm] |
I went my first Sisters of Mercy concert on May 4th and I had a great time. The Manchester Academy was packed with Goths and people in black T-shirts un-suprisingly! early on sound was a bit murky particularly during Doctor Jeep/Detonation Boulevard but I thought the sound improved from Sussane. I really enjoyed Summer and how the way the lights changed with the song added atmosphere. but for me the main highlight of the night was the brilliant reworking of Lucretia with a great sudden ending. I also enjoyed the instrumental Top Night Out as it was cool to see the guitarists (supper side burned Chris Catalyst & new boy Ben Christo) get a bit of the limelight and Eldrich's absence also built up the anticipation for the encore Temple of Love which was "groovy"
Overall 8/10

| Paris & Manchester |
[23 Feb 2006|10:57am] |
I am back in Blighty after 3 days in Paris! I went with Kate because she had tickets to see Depeche Mode and although I did not go to the concert (im going to the London show) I enjoyed my first plane trip. Our accommodation was nice and I had chance to look around the outdoor market that was on the high street on tuesday and go out for an Italian meal which seem wrong to be having in france but was nice. Also while Im here I can add that we went to the Collectormania sci-fi event at the GMEX Manchester back in Feb. where I met Avery Brooks and Brent Spiner from Star trek and Kate stalked met James Callis from Battlestar Galactica and Danny John Jules and Robert Lewellyn of Red Dwarf fame. So where now both officaly GEEKS! Unfortunaty I fuuked up with the camera so I cant post any photos :(

| Music CD recomendation |
[30 Mar 2005|03:32am] |
Paradise Lost have an new album out called simply Paradise Lost ! This 10th album has a very epic Goth Metal sound in general with operatic female backing vocals adding drama. tracks Grey, Forever After and All You Leave Behind instantly grabbed me but some of the other song sound too similar to each other. still this album is definitely Mr Mercy recommended.
8/10
